We Know You Love the Thrill of the Chase, but...

Regardless of specialty, most collectors agree that it’s the thrill of the chase that keeps the hunt for the next great find so exciting.  Ask anyone with a passion for amazing books and ephemera about their greatest find, and you just might hear a tale of coincidence, intrigue, detective work, or just plain luck worthy of publication on its own!  And there’s no better place this September for antique book and paper enthusiasts to find their next great score than at the Brooklyn Antiquarian Book Fair (BABF), to be held September 9th-11th at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Brooklyn NY.

But how about an unfair advantage in the never ending pursuit of the next big find?  Many of the quality dealers who will be showing at the BABF also list their inventory on ABEBOOKS.  ABEBOOKS is one of the sponsors of this great event - and as such, has prepared a little “secret weapon” to help collectors and dealers connect.   Called “FairSearch,” this specialized search feature on the ABEBOOKS website allows visitors to search specifically for books and materials in the inventory of BABF dealers.  As such, collectors can virtually “preshop” the event, contact dealers with questions, and request that dealers bring specific items to the show for further review and purchase.  “FairSearch” can be found by clicking here or at www.abebooks.com/bookfairs/brooklyn-antiquarian-book-fair.shtml.

This fantastic feature allows visitors to search by author, title, keywords, date of publication, relevant industry attributes, and date of listing.  Once a search has been completed, results can be sorted by numerous parameters, including by price, author, title, date of publication, rating, and many others.  And, in the big picture, this search engine is great way to see what’s available, and to get a feeling for the marketplace today.   It is important to note, however, that most sellers have thousands of items in their inventory, but for logistical as well as practical purposes, usually only bring a few hundred to any given live event.  As such, if you do find something of interest on FairSearch for the BABF, make sure to contact the dealer beforehand to insure that they bring the item or items with them to the event.

It’s also worth exploring FairSearch to help prepare for your visit to the BABF.  For example, targeted searches may reveal which dealers specialize in your favorite categories, or seem to have inventory related to your collecting interests.  It never hurts to reach out beforehand and ask a dealer if they have other, or unlisted, items pertaining to a specific area.  You never know, and the worst that can happen is that they say no.  Of course, they could say yes, and have your “holy grail” on hand!

Your blog editor gave FairSearch for the BABF a test drive.  A search for “Brooklyn” in the title revealed 320 hits.  These ranged in price from $10,000 for an “Original photographic portrait of Jack Kerouac, 6 1/2 x 10 inches (image size), inscribed in the margin below the image: "We used to sing together under the Brooklyn Bridge - Alexander Nevsky! - Jack Kerouac 1953 N.Y. Waterfront, Allen Ginsberg" from BABF dealer James S. Jaffe Rare Books, LLC, ABAA to $5 for This is Next Year. A Story of Baseball Past as Seen Through the Eyes of One Brooklyn Family by author Philip Goldberg from BABF dealer John Bale Books LLC - and everything in between!  Here are a few really interesting “Brooklyn” highlights from this search.
