<image:title>A New Look at Old Books & Ephemera - Yes, Looks Count, Especially with Books: a Conversation with Adrienne Kitts - THE FUN OF IT; RANDOM RECORDS OF MY OWN FLYING AND OF WOMEN IN AVIATION</image:title>
<image:caption>[WOMEN PIONEERS]; [AVIATRIXES]; [AVIATION]; EARHART, AMELIA. New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932. First Edition. 8vo (5⅝” x 8¼”). pp. 218. INCLUDES RECORDING OF EARHART'S 1932 LONDON BROADCAST. Bound in brown, linen weave cloth. Dust jacket in brown with white lettering and an image of Earhart in the center. Includes frontis. and 30 additional photographic illustrations as well as a 4"x 4" phonograph recording from Earhart's international broadcast from London following her solo flight across the Atlantic on May 22, 1932, contained in the rear pocket. Earhart's second book discusses her personal background, the achievements of the other daring women in aviation and provides encouragement to young women flyers. The book was complete prior to Earhart's solo flight across the Atlantic, but the publisher requested that Earhart write the final chapter that records her impressions of her historic flight following its conclusion, which she did 4 days after her flight, and cabled the text to them. The phonograph record included in the book was of Earhart's CBS broadcast from London on 22 May, 1932, the day following the conclusion of her flight. The title of the book derives from a statement Earhart makes on page 96: ``Flying may not be all plain sailing, of course...but the fun of it is worth the price``. A very good + copy, with slight rubbing of the titles at the base of the spine, and a small dent on the top edge of the front board; offsetting to the endpapers from previously laid in material. The very good dust jacket has some light folding and small chips along the top and bottom edges, and a closed tear (1½”) at the top of the rear panel and a small open tear (¼”) also at the top of the rear panel. The fine Silvertone phonograph record is in its original pocket on the rear paste-down, with the gold foil seal carefully removed from the record, but it still present and intact on the pocket. <image:caption>[DEAN, CHRISTOPHER (binding design)]; DOUGLAS, LANGTON. London: George Bell and Sons, 1902. Second Edition. Tall 4to (7½” x 11⅛”). pp. 185. Signed Arts & Crafts binding design by Christopher Dean in dark green, white and gold on sage green linen weave cloth. A study of the life and works of Fra Giovanni Angelico Da Fiesole, an Early Italian Renaissance painter and miniaturist who was also a monk in the Dominican order (thus "Fra Giovanni" or "Brother John"). He is considered one of the greatest 15th century painters. Here Dean uses the Madonna Lily (Lillium candidum) as his primary motif for the binding design, which alludes to not only to Fra Angelico's work in depicting the Holy Family, but also Fra Angelico's humility and devotion as a Dominican monk. A near fine ex-library copy WITH NO EXTERNAL MARKINGS OR LIBRARY PARAPHERNALIA; there is a contemporary engraved library bookplate and a small library ownership mark (1") on the verso of the frontis. and on the title page. There is a deaccession slip laid in. A scarce book, exceptionally so in this condition. Haslam 58. (2065) $250</image:caption>

<image:title>A New Look at Old Books & Ephemera - Yes, Looks Count, Especially with Books: a Conversation with Adrienne Kitts - PRIDE AND PREJUDICE</image:title>
<image:caption>[THOMSON, HUGH (cover design and illustrations)]; AUSTEN, JANE; SAINTSBURY, GEORGE (preface). London: George Allen, 1895. First edition. C8vo (5” x 7⅜”). pp. 476. Unsigned binding design by Hugh Thomson in gold on smooth green cloth; a.e.g. Includes 160 illustrations - from full page to amusing allegorical chapter heads and tail pieces, to charming and sometimes emblematic historiated initial caps; a.e.g. The first fully illustrated edition of Pride and Prejudice as prior editions had frontispieces only. Hugh Thomson's ability to capture the spirit of Austen's humor in his charming drawings for Pride & Prejudice has had a distinct influence on Austen readers for generations, and has proven more popular than any other edition, becoming almost as iconic as the novel itself. Thomson's Peacock cover was a great influence on subsequent peacock binding designs, most notably, A. A. Turbayne's stylized peacock for Macmillan's Illustrated Novel series the following year. It should be noted that the term "Janeite" was coined by George Saintsbury in the preface to this edition. (1) A near fine copy with a bright, fresh cover; faint toning to the margins of the frontis. and the title page; light, scattered foxing to the eps and slight rubbing to the tips. Balston II:A1; Gilson E78; Spielmann 12. 1. Sutherland. Jane Austen's Textual Lives: From Aeschylus to Bollywood (Oxford: OUP, 2005). (2148) $2,750</image:caption>

<image:caption>[BLAKE, WILLIAM and SHIELDS, FREDERIC (binding design)]; BLAKE, WILLIAM; GILCHRIST, ALEXANDER; GILCHRIST, ANNE BURROWS; ROSSETTI, DANTE GABRIEL (editor of poetry selections); ROSSETTI, WILLIAM MICHAEL (Annotated Catalogue of Pictorial Works).. London: Macmillan and Co., 1880. Large 8vo (6⅛” x 9¼"). Two volumes. Volume I: pp. 431 + frontis. and 55 b/w full page mounted illustrations as well as head and tail pieces by Blake. Vol. II: pp.358 + frontis. and 39 illustrations that include 21 mounted photo-intaglio reproductions of Blake engravings and 16 Blake drawings reproduced in sepia. Unsigned cover design in gold on dark green cloth adapted by Shields from a rough sketch in Blake's manuscript notebook of Oberon and Titania (from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream) asleep in the heart of a poppy. Spine with titles in gold and an angelic figure adapted by Shields from one of Blake's designs for Edward Young'sNight Thoughts (1742-1745). William Blake (1757- 1727) was a English poet, painter, and printmaker who is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. Gilchrist's Life of Blake was the first biography of Blake and itself of seminal importance to the creation of Blake’s reputation in the nineteenth century. This enlarged edition includes additional letters and illustrations by Blake here published for the first time; additional biographical material as well as the first publication of Shield's adaptation of Blake's work for the cover design. A very good copy with offsetting from some of the tissue guards to the illustrations; light foxing on the margins of the illustrations for Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience; faint foxing to the extremities of Vol. II; rubbing to the corners and head/tail of the spine with a ¼” start to the front joint of vol. II; some dulling to the spine design. A very nice set with particularly bright covers. (2010) $850</image:caption>

<image:title>A New Look at Old Books & Ephemera - Yes, Looks Count, Especially with Books: a Conversation with Adrienne Kitts - THE YOSEMITE</image:title>
<image:caption>[TRAVEL - CALIFORNIA - YOSEMITE VALLEY]; [ENVIRONMENTAL LAW]; MUIR, JOHN. New York: The Century Company, 1914 (1912). First Edition. 8vo (6" x 8½"). pp. 284. Early printing. An unsigned binding design in textured gold and two shades of gray on dark green cloth of the image on p. 124 of Mirror Lake, Mount Watkins and the slopes of Cloud's Rest. The binding design continues on the spine. With three folding maps of the Yosemite valley, vignette title page, frontispiece and 31 full-page photogravures, featuring the beauty spots of the Yosemite Valley. A travel guide and a call for the defense of the Yosemite valley, which was at the time threatened by development of the Hetch Hetchy Valley, a remote and magnificent corner of the Yosemite Grant, into a reservoir for the city of San Francisco. Muir had been fighting for the preservation of the Hetch Hetchy Valley since 1908, when the development plans for a reliable source of water for San Francisco following the Earthquake and Fire of 1906 were released. Although Muir did not testify before Congress, this book bears his impassioned plea against the damming of the Hetch Hetchy Valley (see chapter 15: pp. 249–252), wherein he strongly concludes with the oft-quoted statement: "Dam Hetch Hetchy! As well dam for water-tanks the people's cathedrals and churches, for no holier temple has ever been consecrated by the heart of man". Sadly, in 1913, Congress chose to allow the dam, and President Wilson signed the Racker Act, which allowed the building of the dam. John Muir died just a year later (1914) during this printing -- some say he died of a broken heart. A stunning binding design that uses two tones of textured gold and two shades of gray and the dark green color of the cloth to create a subtle but striking interpretation of the image on p. 124 of Mirror Lake, Mount Watkins and the slopes of Cloud's Rest. A very good + copy with a slight bump to the upper front corner and faint rubbing to the upper portion of gilt stamping. Scarce. BAL 14767. (2236) $625</image:caption>
